Hello from E3!

505 Games and Remedy Entertainment are at E3 once again! Last year we announced Control for the very first time and this year we are bringing a playable build of Control which is running on PCs powered by Nvidia’s GeForce RTX cards. What this basically means is gorgeous graphics with ray-tracing enabled.

For those new to the game, Control is a third-person action-adventure set in the shape-shifting building of the Federal Bureau of Control (FBC), a secret government agency that keeps the supernatural out of the public eye. However the supernatural which is being referred to as “The Hiss”, has broken free within the FBC itself and it’s up to you to regain control of the bureau and uncover its secrets.

For those of you that want to know more about how ray-tracing works in Control, let’s start with ray traced reflections. In Control, ray traced reflections simulate the way light reflects on glossy and metal surfaces by tracing a single bounce of reflection rays against the scene. This includes smooth natural mirrors like window glass, but also rougher surfaces like brushed metal. Unlike screen space techniques which can only reflect what’s on screen, ray traced reflections incorporate the entire scene around the character, and can accurately represent objects outside the camera view, or facing away from the camera. On another note, Control is actually one of the first games to feature ray traced reflections on translucent materials!

Moving on to ray traced indirect diffuse lighting which is also supported by Control powered by RTX GeForce cards: Diffuse reflection means light bouncing between non-glossy surfaces. When this indirect light is taken into account, you get a more realistic image on screen. For example, a brightly lit red carpet might reflect a subtle red glow on a nearby wall. The end result is that lighting feels more “natural” and objects “sit” better in the scene.
